Before the Twister, the closing wheel market primarily offered straight-spike designs. These models did a good job of breaking up the sidewall, but they didn’t firm the seed in the furrow or remove air pockets well.
When the Twister came along, it changed the way the industry thought about the purpose and function of closing wheels. The Twister is set apart by its twisted spikes, which angle toward each other. With every revolution of the wheel, the Twister moves soil inward to tuck in the seed. The blunt and chunky spikes have a bigger footprint and better tamping action than a pointed spike, leading to better seed-to-soil contact.
Straight-spike models also don’t have a depth band like Twisters do. The depth band controls how deep the Twister goes, eliminating the potential for seed displacement and allowing more consistent seed furrow closure. Between the depth band and the less aggressive, blunted spike of the Twister, you can run efficiently at high speeds without sacrificing the integrity of your seed furrow.
The Twister is a Beck’s PFR Proven product, which means it has provided a positive yield increase during three or more years of testing. These unbiased, farmer-focused studies are conducted in the Midwest and compare the Twister with other closing wheels on the market.
In the most recent research published by Beck’s in 2023, the Twister Poly Ring Closing Wheel averaged a 5.1 bushels per acre increase in corn yields over standard solid rubber closing wheels. The Twister outperformed competitor products by 1.3–2.4 bushels per acre. For soybeans, the Twister averaged a 2.5 bushels per acre increase over standard rubber wheels and outperformed competitors by 1.2–2.5 bushels per acre.
What about cost investment? Per Beck’s, at $4.50 per bushel of corn, it would take 9.84 corn row acres to pay off investing in a Twister. With soybeans at $11 per bushel, it would take 8.17 soybean row acres to pay it off. When you take into account the yield increases provided by the Twister, it’s clear this is a closing wheel that provides solid long-term return on investment.
