How to Install 6200 Twister Closing Wheels

Are Yetter 6200 Twister Closing Wheels part of your planter setup? Following these five installation steps helps ensure your Twisters are in the best position to successfully close the seed furrow on your operation and set you up for optimal seed germination and uniform emergence.

1. Gather your tools.

To install your Twister Closing Wheels, you’ll need these tools:

  • Impact wrench with 15/16 socket
  • End wrench
  • Socket with 1 1/4"–1 1/2" diameter
  • Tape measure

2. Remove the old closing wheels.

As you take off the old or factory-installed closing wheels, be sure to save the original hardware, including the bolts, nuts, bushings, and washers. The Twister kit comes with extra washers, but those other pieces of stock hardware will be reused when you install your Twisters.

What hardware comes stock will vary by row unit. If you have a John Deere row unit, keep the left bolts with the left wheels and the right bolts with the right wheels (the bolts are designed to work on their specific sides).

3. Prepare to mount your Twister Closing Wheels.

First, you’ll need to identify your right-side and left-side Twisters. Each wheel has a tooth that is stamped with an “L” to install on the left or an “R” to install on the right. Whether the letter is facing inward or outward doesn’t matter, as long as the wheel is on the correct side.

The wheels are designed to work as a pair to merge soil together, so they should be installed across from each other and not offset.

Most tailpieces come with two holes per side. Most growers install both Twisters in the rear holes, which puts some distance between the closing wheels and the row unit and helps prevent plugging in wet conditions. If you have contours in your field, you may want to consider installing the Twisters in the front holes instead. When the closing wheels are closer to the row unit, they can track better on those contours.

4. Install your Twister Closing Wheels.

Reusing your original bushings and flat washers, position each Twister on the correct side in the mounting hole you’ve chosen. Then use the impact wrench to install.

5. Check your wheel spacing.

Yetter recommends 1 1/4"–1 1/2" spacing between wheels. The exact spacing is up to the grower and will depend on the operation, but 1 3/8" is a good rule of thumb if you’re not sure where to start.

To check the spacing between your Twisters, find a socket with an outside diameter that matches the spacing you want. You can use a tape measure to double-check the socket’s diameter. Then, position the socket below a pair of wheels and rock the wheels back and forth to find the narrowest point. If the socket fits snugly in that point, your spacing is correct. If not, you’ll need to adjust.
